Corine Buckles

ROXIE – Corine “Lena” Buckles died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at her home. She was 72.

Mrs. Buckles was a retired cook. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Roxie, where she was on the Mother Board and Usher Board. She was a former member of the Order of Eastern Star.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Essie Hammond Magee and Clarence Hammond Sr.; a son, Alvin L. Buckles; one sister, Ivory Mae Malone; one brother, Joe J. Hammond; and a granddaughter, Jessica C. McCoy.

Survivors include her husband, Albert Buckles Jr.; four daughters, Essie Singleton and Beverly McCoy, both of Roxie, Mary Proby of Natchez and Dorothy White of Biloxi; two brothers, Viria Hammond of Hattiesburg and Clarence Hammond Jr. of Newport, Tenn.; one sister, Thelma Hockett of Roxie; and 12 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and other relatives and friends.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Roxie with the Rev. Carl Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 1 until 7 tonight at Rollins Funeral Home in Fayette.

Pallbearers will be Roosevelt Williams, Keldrick Keys, Noah Rankin, Donald Hammond, Henry Brooks, Broderick McCoy and Barnaby White.

Shirley Barnes Chatman

BOLTON – Shirley Barnes Chatman, formerly of Vicksburg, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. She was 76.

Mrs. Chatman was a resident of Bolton.

She was preceded in death by one son, Pierre Davis; her parents, William and Mamie Barnes; two sisters, Narrie Barnes and Mary Henderson; and two brothers, William Barnes Jr. and Albert Barnes Sr.

She is survived by a daughter, Lolita Morales of South Carolina; a son, Alfred Davis Jr. of Bolton; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews, including Linda Barnes Wright of Vicksburg; and cousins and other relatives.

Bolton Funeral Home has charge of arrangements.

Mary Jane Cotten

WEST MONROE, La. – Mary Jane Cotten died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at her home in West Monroe, La. She was 47.

Mrs. Cotten was born in Monroe.

She was preceded in death by her father, W.L. Cotten.

She is survived by a son, Shawn Paul Cotten of Oak Grove; her mother, Myra Beatrice Davis Cotten of Monroe; three brothers, Troy Cotten of West Monroe, Larry Cotten of Oak Grove and James Davis of Richton; three sisters, Betty Cotten of West Monroe, Pat Hernandez of Collinston, La., and Brenda Spillers of Downsville, La.; one grandson; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Cox Funeral Home in Oak Grove with the Rev. J.D. Favors officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.

Visitation will be until 9 tonight at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Michael Cotten, Jason Spillers, Jared Cotten, Dustin Cotten, Joel Cotten and Henry Kimball.

Corine Beacham Hicks

UTICA – Corine Beacham Hicks died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at Forest Hill Nursing Center in Jackson. She was 107.

Mrs. Hicks was a former Utica resident.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Westhaven Memorial Funeral Home in Utica with K.C. Frazier officiating. Burial will follow at Little Mount Church Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

John Kendrick

ROLLING FORK – John Kendrick died Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2005, at Sharkey-Issaquena Hospital in Rolling Fork. He was 70.

Mr. Kendrick is survived by his wife, Claudia Kendrick of Rolling Fork; two sons, James Kendrick of Robbins, Ill., and Jerry Kendrick of Menard, Ill.; four daughters, Shirley Williams of Greenville, Toya Kendrick of Rolling Fork, Annette Speed of Harvey, Ill., and Monica Kendrick of Chicago Heights, Ill.; three brothers, the Rev. Ollie Kendrick of Omaha, Neb., Joe Kendrick of Andover, Md., and Kenneth Kendrick of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three sisters, Christine Crishom of Kankakee, Ill., Zenobia Pless of Kansas City, Mo., and Arlinda Rahn of Omaha; and 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Mount Lula M.B. Church in Rolling Fork with the Rev. A.L. Hodo officiating. Burial will follow at Green Chapel Cemetery under the direction of Walker Funeral Home in Rolling Fork.

Jean G. Tompkins

Jean G. Tompkins died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2005, at Shady Lawn Nursing Home. She was 78.

A native of Bristol, Conn., Mrs. Tompkins lived in Jackson for a number of years and had been a Vicksburg resident for the past 15 years. She was a homemaker and member of the Friendship Club of Parkwood South Apartments.

She is survived by a son, Thomas E. Tompkins of Jackson; a daughter, Patricia T. Martin of Vicksburg; one brother, James Gallagher of Plainville, Conn.; one sister, Janet St. Pierre of Plainville; two grandsons; and nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Baldwin-Lee Funeral Home in Jackson. Burial will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Visitation will be at the funeral home Thursday from 11 a.m. until the service.

George Wilson Jr.

PORT GIBSON – George Wilson Jr. died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2005, at his home in Port Gibson. He was 69.

He is survived by a sister, Mary Jennings of Hermanville; and a brother, Walter Wilson of Port Gibson.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Peter A.M.E. Church in Port Gibson. Burial will follow at Spring Hill Cemetery on Grand Gulf Road under the direction of Westhaven Funeral Home.

Visitation will be from 4 until 6 p.m. Friday at the church.
