In a little more than two weeks, school-age children in Vicksburg will be sharpening pencils, packing bookbags and heading back to the classroom.
About 620 teachers in the Vicksburg Warren School District will report to work the week of July 28, with some 8,982 public school students following on Aug. 4.
Classes at Vicksburg’s three private and parochial schools will also resume the week of Aug. 4.
On Aug. 6, about 40 students at Vicksburg Community School will begin classes. Hitting the books a day later will be Vicksburg Catholic School’s 565 students and Porters Chapel Academy, for which enrollment numbers were not available.
The 2008-2009 school year will bring changes for the public schools – the opening of Bovina Elementary, which has been closed since 1999, and the implementation of a new bonus week schedule, which eliminates summer school. Four bonus weeks have been built into the school year and will provide remediation for students who have fallen behind.
The new year will also bring changes for Vicksburg Catholic School. At St. Aloysius High, students will be allowed to wear purple uniform tops, as opposed to last year’s choice of purple, white or yellow. This year, St. Francis Xavier Elementary will join St. Al in wearing athletic shoes that cover the foot. Hooded sweatshirts are no longer allowed for anyone. Socks, tights and undershirts must be white.
The school year will wrap up in May with Vicksburg Community School breaking for summer May 15. Porters Chapel will finish up May 19 and Vicksburg Catholic on May 27. VWSD will be the last to wrap up the year, finishing May 29.
