Flu reports up across Vicksburg, state

Flu season is in full swing in Mississippi and an increase in cases has been seen in Vicksburg since Thanksgiving, health officials said Tuesday.

“We started seeing a lot of cases around the Thanksgiving holiday,” said Dr. Geri Weiland, a pediatrician at River Region Medical Center, “and this year we are seeing more type B cases than A.”

Type B is a milder type of flu, with fewer symptoms, than type A, which causes the fever, chills and nausea usually associated with the flu, Weiland said.

“In the flu season we usually see one type or the other,” Weiland said, “although sometimes we get a double dip and during one part of the season we might get A and later on B.”
