Carolyn Scott Kitchens

Carolyn Scott Kitchens died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 2010, at River Region Medical Center. She was 90.

Born in Bassett, Neb., Mrs. Kitchens moved to Vicksburg in 1937. She graduated from Mississippi College in 1970. She was a retired English teacher.

She began her teaching career at Brunswick School at Eagle Lake and taught for many years in the Warren County Schools. She was past president of the Vicksburg-Warren County Retired Teachers Association and an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma.

She was active in St. Alban’s Episcopal Church, having served as director of Christian education, sponsor of the youth for 18 years, pianist for Sunday school for 45 years and organist and choir director for many years.

Mrs. Kitchens was a long-time active member of the Ashmead chapter of the National Society of D.A.R., twice serving as regent. She was a charter member and organizing secretary of the Fort St. Pierre Chapter of the National Society Colonial Dames of the 17th Century. She was a member of the Magnolia Chapter of the Mayflower Society, serving as elder. She was a member of the Thomas Minor Society and Vicksburg Chapter of the Daughters of the American Colonists.

She was preceded in death by her husband, William F. Kitchens; her son-in-law, Griffin Alford; a sister, Edith Miller; and a brother, James Scott.

Survivors include two sons, Allen Kitchens Sr. and wife Linda of Bovina and Don S. Kitchens and wife Kristie of Germantown, Tenn.; two daughters, Carolyn M. Alford of Madison and Cheryl K. Aull and husband Joe of Asheville, N.C.; one brother, John B. Scott of Bovina; three sisters, Eleanor Price and Alice Pronger, both of Vicksburg, and Helen Emrick of Kansas; and eight grandchildren, Allen Kitchens Jr., Alicia Arseneau, Sarah Ballard, Leahbeth Turpin, Bill Aull, Michael Aull, Scott Kitchens and Drew Kitchens.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at St. Alban’s Episcopal Church with the Rev. Billie Abraham officiating. Burial will follow at St. Alban’s Cemetery under the direction of Glenwood Funeral Home. Visitation will be at the parish hall of the church from 10 a.m. Friday until the service.

Pallbearers will be Del Price, James Price, Richard Price, Terry Guynes, Brother Blackburn, John Kamman, Greg Scott and John Scott.
