JACKSON, Tenn. — Nerissa Gray Smith, a former resident of Edwards, died Thursday, June 16, 2011, at her daughter’s home. She was 93.

Ms. Smith was a graduate of Southern Christian Institute in Edwards. She was elected as the first and only female mayor of Edwards in 1989. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church and Amaranth Chapter of the Eastern Star Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Prince A. and Carrie H. Gray.

Survivors include her daughter, Catherine Smith-Lewis of Jackson, Tenn.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at United Missionary Baptist Church in Edwards. Visitation will be today from 1 until 7 at Lakeover Funeral Home in Jackson.
