Prevention the best remedy for flu season

Founding father Benjamin Franklin once said, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” No better time exists to heed that advice than now as the Mississippi State Department of Health warned that the flu season is hitting the state at its earliest point in nearly a decade.
Influenza is a contagious respiratory illness caused by the influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness and, at times, can lead to death. Some people, such as older people and young children, are at high risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.
People who have the flu often show these symptoms: fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, fatigue and headaches.
Its impacts spread beyond those two demographics, however, and the CDC recommends everyone get a flu vaccination. Simple precautions also can be taken to help limit the chance of being affected by the flu.
• Wash hands frequently with soapy water.
• Avoid going to work or school if flu symptoms are present. The virus can easily spread through coughing and sneezing. Co-workers and teachers will understand.
The CDC estimates that 26,000 Americans will die each year from influenza. That number varies depending on the season, the CDC said, but the risk remains prevalent.
Flu vaccines are available at county health departments, drug stores and physician’s offices. We urge everyone to be prudent this flu season. Take precautions and be responsible for yourself and those around you.
And always heed Ben Franklin’s advice.
