DSU advances to Round of 16 in D-II tournament

Delta State picked up one sweet win on Sunday.

Devin Schmidt finished with 22 points and 11 rebounds, and Willie Readus added 11 points to lead the third-seeded Statesmen past Saint Leo University 70-61 and into the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Delta State (26-6) will play No. 8 seed Tuskegee University (19-11) Tuesday at 6 p.m. in Lakeland, Fla. The winner will advance to Evansville, Ind., for the Elite Eight that begins March 26.

Delta State is in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2006, and is seeking its first Elite Eight appearance since 1998.

Delta State led by three points, 52-49, with 8:57 to play, then went on a 9-2 run to gain some separation. Schmidt scored four points during the run, and Michael Weems hit a 3-pointer. Delta State led by as many as 10 points coming down the stretch, and Saint Leo never got its within a single possession of the lead again.

Jerrel Harris led Saint Leo with 27 points and five assists. Mike Washington and Jack Madgen scored nine points apiece for Delta State. Washington hit a jumper that kickstated Delta State’s decisive run.
