Vicksburg National Military Park will be accepting volunteers this morning to put fresh coats of paint on gates at the National Cemetery and some of the park’s cannons.
Work begins at 8 a.m., and volunteers need to meet on at the USS Cairo parking lot on the north side of the park, VNMP natural resources manager Virginia DuBowy said in an email.
The volunteer work is part the annual Civil War Trust Park Day.
The park will provide a pizza lunch for volunteers at noon at the USS Cairo picnic area. The lunch break will also include a presentation by the park’s interpretive staff.
The Civil War Trust is the largest nonprofit battlefield preservation organization in the country. The group began holding Park Day in 1996. In 2013, nearly 8,000 volunteers donated more than 36,000 service hours at 105 historic sites across the country.
