WC Lady Vikes fall to Grenada

A momentary lapse in concentration was all Grenada needed to seize the advantage in its Class 6A play-in round series against Warren Central.

Olivia Burns stole home in the bottom of the first inning while WC pitcher Darby Gain was walking back to the mound, and it held up as the game’s only run as Grenada took Game 1 of the best-of-three series 1-0 Thursday.

Games 2 and, if necessary, 3, will be played as a doubleheader today at Lucy Young Field beginning at 4 p.m.

“It was just a mental error, but I’m feeling like tomorrow will be better,” WC coach Dana McGivney said.

Other than that one mistake, Gain was nearly flawless for WC (20-5). She walked two, allowed four hits, and struck out four in six innings.

Burns, though, was just as good in the circle. She struck out seven batters and allowed six hits.

WC did have a chance to tie the game in the seventh inning. It had runners at second and third with one out, but Lawren Boolos was caught trying to swipe home. Gain then popped up to the catcher for the final out of the game.
