At the encouragement of his coach, Warren Central senior Lamon Wells went on Belhaven University’s athletics web site and filled out the questionaire for prospective athletes.

Thirty minutes later he had an offer to run for the school’s track and field team and a definitive college destination.

Wells, a middle distance runner for Warren Central, on Thursday signed a letter of intent to run for Belhaven next season.

“It’s a great opportunity, because I love running track,” said Wells, who also ran for Warren Central’s cross country team. “It keeps me focused on the books because I know I have something to do, and it’ll keep me in shape.”

Belhaven is transitioning from membership in the NAIA to NCAA Division III, and does not offer athletic scholarships. Wells said he’ll receive some financial aid and scholarships that will cover much of the cost of tuition.

Wells has a 3.2 grade point average and plans to major in mathematics, with an eye toward an engineering career.

On the track, he said he’s looking forward to improving on his high school marks and being a factor for Belhaven in the years to come.

His best times were around 53 seconds in the 400 meters, and 2:09 in the 800 meters. He also competed, on occasion, in the 1,600 meters for Warren Central.

“I’m looking forward to it, because we usually train three months in high school. And with the weather this year, we didn’t have time to train,” Wells said. “I’m going to try to get to 47 or 48 (seconds) in the 400, and 1:53 in the 800.”
