With the winning run 90 feet away and the series hanging in the balance, Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco had exactly the guy he wanted at the plate.

Auston Bousfield didn’t let his coach or the fans at Swayze Field down.

Bousfield sliced an RBI single to center field to score Holt Perdzock, and Ole Miss maintained its hold on the Southeastern Conference West Division lead with a 2-1, walk-off win over Georgia on Sunday afternoon.

Bousfield went 2-for-5 and drove in both runs for the Rebels (37-15, 17-10 SEC). He also had an RBI single in the fifth inning.

“They robbed Bousfield earlier with runners on first and second when we let him swing,” Bianco said. “I don’t know if there’s a better guy in the country than Auston to come up (in the 10th). He’s not going to strikeout. He can catch up to the fastball and handle the breaking ball.”

Ole Miss took two out of three games in the series despite scoring just two runs in the last two games. After winning the opener 12-2, it was shut out on Saturday and won Sunday’s low-scoring finale.

The Rebels had eight hits Sunday, but left eight runners on base and hit into two double plays. Bousfield also made the last out of the fifth inning when he overslid second base while trying to stretch his RBI single into a double.

“Georgia was terrific defensively all weekend, especially today,” Bianco said. “I thought we had a good offensive day, even though we only scored a couple runs.”

Starting pitchers Sam Smith of Ole Miss and David Sosebee of Georgia (25-25-1, 10-16-1) each allowed one run in seven innings. Each struck out three batters and neither allowed a walk, but both left the game with no-decisions.

Georgia reliever Jared Cheek (5-5) pitched two scoreless innings before running into trouble in the 10th.

Perdzock drew a one-out walk, then made it to third on a base hit to right field by Errol Robinson. It was Robinson’s third hit of the game.

After an intentional walk to Braxton Lee to load the bases and set up a force play at home plate, Georgia pulled in its outfielders and went with a five-man infield.

Bousfield, though, found the soft spot in the defense. He lined his single just over second base and in front of the center fielder to bring in Perdzock with the winning run and send the Rebels streaming from the dugout in celebration.

“Today was a really good baseball game, and we just came up on the short end,” Georgia coach Scott Stricklin said.
