Staring down the barrel of its third consecutive series loss, Southern Miss responded in fine fashion Sunday.

Mason Robbins went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Connor Barron was 2-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, and the Golden Eagles rallied in the later innings to beat East Carolina 6-4.

The win secured Southern Miss’ (30-22, 17-10 Conference USA) seventh series victory in nine weekends. It came after it had lost the last two series, as well as Sautrday’s opener against East Carolina in 15 innings.

Southern Miss will finish the regular season with a three-game series at Charlotte beginning Thursday, then will host the C-USA Tournament May 21-25.

“Coming off yesterday’s win in game two, after the loss in game one, it was all about momentum,” Southern Miss coach Scott Berry said. “People don’t understand that when you lose a 15-inning game, how hard it is to go out there and compete in game two. We seem to feel sorry for ourselves. We put everything on the line for 15 innings, and we have nothing to show for it but a loss. So the test after that was to go out and define ourselves. We passed that test last night, but the next test was to carry that momentum into today.”

The Golden Eagles had to fight to win Sunday’s series finale. They jumped out to a 4-1 lead before East Carolina (29-23, 14-13) scored three times in the seventh inning to tie it up.

Dylan Brown had a two-run single for the Pirates, and Bryce Harman tied the game with a sacrifice fly.

Southern Miss, though, answered right back.

Barron led off with a double and scored on a ground out by Matt Durst to put USM back in front in the bottom of the seventh. Tim Lynch walked and scored on a two-out double by Nick Dawson in the eighth inning for a 6-4 lead.

Southern Miss reliever Sean Buchholz gave up a walk and a single to Ian Townsend in the ninth before striking out Harman to lock up his fifth save of the season.

“I think we have amnesia,” Robbins said. “They put up runs on us and we just forget it and do what we need to do and end up scratching and scoring and winning ball games.

“That first game we got popped in the mouth. Then coming out (Sunday) we just had keep focused. We have a lot of teams coming up behind us in the conference so we needed to get this win.”
