United Way director says goodbye

Published 10:00 am Thursday, May 22, 2014

As I end my forty-one year career from two great professions and move into retirement I would like to extend my deepest gratitude to the wonderful staff of United Way, our dynamic Board of Directors, and the hundreds of volunteers who love this community as I do. I also want to thank each individual in and out of the organization for allowing me, and assisting me, in my growth both personally and professionally during the years.

As a teacher and principal, I met some of the greatest role models during my 27 years. These were people who worked tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of children. I never imagined that I would meet another group of individuals who cared so deeply and were so passionate about their work until I met the agency directors of the United Way. Their work goes beyond anything that I have ever witnessed. Their passion, dedication, and commitment to changing lives is evident in their talk and their walk. They are the experts and have the solutions to many of our social ills in this community. Please join them in the work that they are doing for the community that we all love so dearly.

I take full responsibility in the fact that there was not a formal gathering on my behalf to greet each of you and share my heartfelt thanks personally. The Board of Directors made several suggestions but I asked that something be done for someone else in my honor. Some of my suggestions included a boxed fan or a bag of groceries for an elderly person or a new school uniform for a child who is in need. That is the legacy that I would like to leave and be remembered by. It has never been about me but about serving others.

The Selection Committee has chosen Mrs. Michele Connelly as the next Executive Director. Michele is ready to get to work, and there is no doubt in my mind that she will excel in her work with United Way. You will enjoy knowing that she is at the helm of this great community organization. Please support Michele and the staff as they move forward TOGETHER.

I owe so much too so many people for their faith and trust in me for doing such important work in my hometown. But more importantly I am thankful to my Heavenly Father for His guidance and love. I give Him all praise, glory, and honor.

With a grateful heart,

Barbara Tolliver
