Police department operates effectively without building

A week after a vehicle crashed into the Vicksburg Police Department, our municipal law enforcement agency has shown that their building is just that: a building.

Despite having several divisions working remotely while construction crews repair the department’s east wing, Vicksburg’s police officers response to calls has not diminished.

Wednesday, Vicksburg police responded to a shooting at the intersection of Halls Ferry Road and Bowmar Avenue.

At least a dozen officers and investigators were on scene within minutes of the initial call from the dispatch office.

A casual observer passing through Marcus Bottom would have thought the entire department had responded.

However, at the same time, officers and investigators were looking into the burglary of six storage units on Wisconsin and Indiana avenues.

Late Tuesday evening, officers conducted an undercover drug operation, which resulted in an arrest.

With a high volume of calls Tuesday and the department operating without access to its normal resources, the response to the incident is all the more impressive.

Within minutes of responding, the victim of the shooting was on her way to the hospital, a suspect had been identified and the situation was contained.

Officers immediately removed from the scene anyone who was interfering with the investigation, including several bystanders who decided to mouth off to the police officers.

Those juveniles and adults who were arrested for disorderly conduct could have become an issue during an already tense situation in the aftermath of the shooting.

Instead, officers defused the situation quickly and professionally and continued with their investigation.

It’s no secret that being a police officer is yeoman’s work. Though we rarely stop to thank the officers of the Vicksburg Police Department as often as we should, their continued ability to respond quickly, calmly and professionally to a variety of problems — even without a fully functioning department building — should be reassuring for all Vicksburg residents.
