Mary Ellen Groome Nelson

Mary Ellen Groome Nelson, affectionately known as “Meg”, passed from this life on Friday, June 20, 2014 at St. Bernard’s Regional Medical Center at the age of 90 years.

Born March 25, 1924, in Vicksburg, MS she married Harold Pettit Nelson and raised a big family. In addition to him, she was preceded in death by her parents, Frank J. Groome and Catherine Harris Groome, and two daughters, Frances Elizabeth (Betsy) and Mary Lynne Nelson Webb.

She is survived by one brother, Richard G. Groome, three daughters, Ellen Sue (Susie) Grommet, Anne Eugenia (Nancy) Nelson, Jane Elizabeth Shank, and two sons, Kenneth Nathaniel Nelson and Harold Pettit Nelson, Jr., 11 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and many family and friends.

She was a life-long member of the Episcopal Church, including Trinity in Pine Bluff, AR and St. Mark’s, Jonesboro. She was well known for her home-baking, and was often called the “Roll Lady”. She enjoyed crossword puzzles, reading mystery novels, classical music, her African violets, but most of all, spending time with family and friends.

Local arrangements are through Emerson Funeral Home in Jonesboro, with a memorial service to be held at a later date. Graveside services will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery at 11 a.m. Monday, June 23, 2014, with The Rev. Van Windsor, of Trinity Episcopal Church in Pine Bluff officiating.

In lieu of flowers, family members request contributions to the donor’s nonprofit organization of choice.
