HouseWorks LLC, a Madison-based building repair and restoration company, has received the contract to repair damage to the Vicksburg Police Department caused when a car crashed through the rear of the building in May.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen Monday approved a contract with HouseWorks estimated at about $80,000 to repair and restore the section of the police station damaged in the accident.
An estimate from HouseWorks puts the total price at $79,414.58 to remove the remaining debris, replace the building’s brick wall, install new Sheetrock, repair the electrical work and the heating and air conditioning in the damaged offices and repaint. The city’s insurance will pay all but about $10,000 of the repairs, Mayor George Flaggs Jr. said, adding the city has a $10,000 deductible.
The board in June declared an emergency to repair the building, which allowed city officials to get quotes on the repairs instead of going through the bid process, which would have taken 30 days before a contract could be awarded for the work.
Police Chief Walter Armstrong said the contractor is working on the building, “but it is slow moving. We don’t have an estimate when it will be completed. They are still in the demolition phase.”
The building was damaged May 29, when a northbound car driven by Carl James, 59, veered off the west side of Monroe Street, struck a speed limit sign, ran though a fence and then knocked a hole in the juvenile investigation office at the south end of the police department before catching fire. No one was in the office at the time of the crash.
James was pronounced dead at the scene.
The crash forced officials to relocate several of the offices in the building, including municipal court, court services, and the department’s investigations, juvenile, domestic violence, narcotics, traffic and K-9 division. Armstrong said municipal court, court services, records and booking have returned to the Police Department building.
