Cancer survivor group needs wigs

No need for that old wig that’s collecting dust? A cancer survivors group wants it donated for its next survivors’ fashion show.
A shortage in wig varieties was evident the last time Believers of Faith Cancer Organization held the last such event for those being treated or whom are winning their battle with any type of cancer, said Carolyn Butler, the group’s founder.
“We offer wigs through the American Cancer Society for the fashion show,” Butler told the Vicksburg Lions Club on Wednesday. “But, you end with a wig that’s too short, too long, lopsided or it doesn’t fit you.”
Butler, who founded the group in 2009 during her bout with breast cancer, said her group is having a wig drive as part of its regular donations to add to the supply of accessories for cancer survivors who take part in the event, set for Sept. 18 at Riverwalk Casino. Wigs donated are sent off to be cleaned before they are offered at the fashion show, Butler said.
The group is seeking members to fill out an executive board so it can achieve nonprofit status and apply for grants, Butler said. Currently, the group uses donated funds to defray the costs of treatments for cancer patients. Donations of money, which Butler said are given to the American Cancer Society, wigs or other items to support the group may be made at any BancorpSouth branch or by contacting Butler.
Last year’s fashion show event raised $6,000, Butler said, which is this year’s goal to break. Each participant will be given money to help pay for their treatments, Butler said.
“I’d like as many survivors or people going through treatments to participate,” Butler said. “It can by any type of cancer.”
