M-Braves nip Mobile with ninth-inning rally

The Mississippi Braves’ best player took it upon himself to provide his team with the offense it so desperately needed.

Jose Peraza reached base on a one-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday night, then stole second and third before scoring on a sacrifice fly by Mycal Jones.

It was the only run in the M-Braves’ 1-0 win over Mobile at Trustmark Park.

Peraza is hitting .356, but had one hit in his previous 11 at-bats before the ninth-inning single off reliever Jimmie Sherfy (3-1).

Mobile starter A.J. Schugel allowed four hits and struck out seven in eight shutout innings. He walked none and left with a no-decision as M-Braves pitcher Williams Perez matched him.

Perez struck out six in seven shutout innings. Reliever Andrew Robinson (3-0) threw two scoreless innings for the win.

The M-Braves have won seven of their last nine games, but are still in third place in the Southern League South Division, four games behind Jacksonville. Mobile is in second place, two games back of the Suns.

Mississippi and Mobile play the fourth game of their five-game series tonight at 5 at Trustmark Park.
