Ray Guy will be inducted into the Hall of Fame today, adding his name to the illustrious list of NFL greats as the first punter ever selected to pro football’s highest honor. The NFL Network has documented the former Southern Miss star’s road into the history books in splendid detail as a part of its “Road to Canton” series. “The Specialist” made its debut Thursday but will re-air on 7 p.m. Sunday on NFL Network.
The film captures the essence of Guy’s life, from his humble upbringing in rural Georgia to his record-setting NFL career and everything in between. The documentary begins at Guy’s childhood house, where he takes the cameras on a tour of his early life, shucking corn and shelling peas before booting punts with his brother in the grassy field behind his house.
It then follows Guy to Hattiesburg, where he and a handful of old teammates venture inside M.M. Roberts Stadium to reminisce on his celebrated college career with the Golden Eagles. The hybrid punter/safety lit up the both the Southern Miss and college football record books, setting a then-NCAA field goal record with a 61-yard boot in the snow against Utah State and holding the record for most interceptions at USM with 8 —one that still stands to this day. He also booted a 93-yard punt against Ole Miss and was named a unanimous All-American in 1972.
Guy became the first pure punter to ever be chosen in the first round of the NFL draft in 1973, when the Oakland Raiders selected him 21st overall. The film then turns to his professional career, highlighted by 7 Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl victory in 1984. John Madden called him one of the best athletes he had ever seen in person, praising both his arm and leg strength and calling Guy the only person that could ever “make fourth down fun.”
Peering into his childhood home, now overrun by weeds and battered by years of wind and rain, Ray Guy replayed the defining moments of his life in his head.
“Even when you grow older, you’ve still got your memories,” he said.
Tonight, he’ll make a memory that will last forever.
