Vice principal of Beechwood Elementary Arthur Jones said in their orientation they would be implementing the “The Leader in Me” program based on the seven habits of Stephen R. Covey’s “The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People.” 

Vicksburg Junior High School principal, Otha Belcher Jr., said the goals of his open house are to address transportation, allowing parents to meet with teachers, and to get lunch accounts set up. Students will also be able to purchase planners.

Jones said that professional development is going well. “The teachers are actively engaged…they have asked a lot of questions.” He is focusing on how teachers can be more efficient in the classroom so that parents feel more at ease. “We’re going to do everything we can to be successful for their children, and we need them to be successful as well.”

Belcher’s open house is for both students and parents. He said students are transitioning from one school to another, and parents and students both get nervous about that. He wants to make them feel as comfortable as possible with the transition.

“We have to have a working relationship [with parents].” This open house gives the parents time to meet with teachers face to face. “Some parents have school phobia.” He said many parents get nervous about school because all they have to rely on for information is their own experience. He hopes to be able to put them at ease at the open house.

VJHS is working with a consulting firm called the Kirkland Group to help with professional development. “They give us more strategies and tools for our toolbox because you can’t know everything.”

Vicksburg Warren School District will have open house on the following dates and schools:

Vicksburg Junior High from 3 to 6:30 p.m.

Warren Central Intermediate from 5 to 6 p.m.

Warren Central Jr. High from 6:15 p.m. for 7th grade and all new students

• August 7

Beechwood from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for 1st through 6th grades

Bowmar Avenue at 6 p.m. for 2nd through 6th grades

South Park from 5:30 to 6 p.m. for Kindergarten, 6 to 6:30 p.m. for 1st through 3rd grades and 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. for 4th-6th grades
