NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Barbara Wylie Bryant, formerly of Vicksburg, died Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at Warwick Forest Retirement Community in Newport News, Va. She was 89.

She graduated from Carr Central High School in 1942. In 1946, she graduated from Mississippi State College for Women with a degree in mathematics. After graduation she worked as a mathematician at the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, which later became NASA.

Mrs. Bryant is survived by her husband of 64 years, John Foster “Jack” Bryant, Jr.; a sister, Joan Wylie Kirk of Austin, Texas; five children, Linda Bryant Curry of Decatur, Ga., Ellen Bryant McCoy of Lexington, Va., Janet Bryant Gartlan of Alexandria, Va., John Foster Bryant III of Newport News, Va. and Anne Bryant McDaniels of Sydney, Australia; 10 grandchildren, three grandchildren-in-law and one great-grandchild.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, 2014, at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Newport News followed by burial at Peninsula Memorial Park under direction of Weymouth Funeral Home.
