Porters Chapel offers Christian education

Porter’s Chapel Academy is dedicated to teaching students in a Christian environment. Students at Porter’s Chapel begin each day with devotion and a prayer. On Thursdays, we have chapel together as a group. Ministers and others in the community are invited to speak and give a testimony. Sometimes teachers or students lead the chapel service. This mission statement explains the goals of the school: Porter’s Chapel Academy strives to train young people through a well-rounded Christian education, thereby preparing them for life as leaders who will choose character before career, wisdom beyond scholarship, service before self and participation as a way of life.
PCA is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and by the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools. MAIS member schools are assigned accreditation ratings. PCA has an AA rating, the highest assigned by MAIS.
The Parents of our students are very important to us. Their involvement has allowed us to make many improvements academically as well as in extra-curricular activities.
Our curriculum is a traditional one. We are very proud of our course sel.ection here at PCA. Several new course offerings are in the curriculum this year. There are plans to increase the number of new courses through on-line services offered by MAIS. Our computer lab has been updated with new computers, and we continue to raise funds for technology. Some SMART Boards for classrooms have been ordered. We are continuing to fundraise to incorporate technology in the classroom.
We offer the PSAT/NMSQT Preliminary SAT to students in the tenth and eleventh grades. For the eleventh graders, this test is the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship. The Stanford 10 Achievement Test and the Otis-Lennon School Ability Test has been given each year in the spring in grades one through eight. This year, we will be giving these tests to students in grades 1-6 and the ACT Aspire to students in grades seven through 11. We hope to prepare our upper level students better for the ACT with this test.
We are very excited to see the many improvements in the facility as well. Renovation has been done in classrooms and the library. We have added another set of bleachers to the home side of the football field, and we are installing a new wood floor in the gym this month. Individual donations and fundraisers have allowed us to continue improvements.
As we begin a new school year, we know that the Lord has blessed us with improvements and growth. Our hope is that we can continue to show progress and educate students in a Christian environment.

Pam Wilbanks is the headmaster of Porters Chapel Academy.
