Mitchell Cunningham rushed for 130 yards and two touchdowns, including a backbreaking 85-yarder with 5 1/2 minutes left in the game, to lead Holmes Community College to a 28-21 win over Hinds Community College in the season opener for both teams Thursday night.

Cunningham’s long TD run was the biggest highlight for Holmes, which totaled 421 yards of offense. It gave the Bulldogs a 28-14 lead and allowed them to survive a last-ditch comeback bid by Hinds.

Quarterback James Summers ran for a 5-yard touchdown with 1:47 left to pull Hinds back to within one score, and the Eagles got the ball back before time ran out. Summers’ hail mary pass on the last play of the game fell incomplete, however.

Port Gibson native Arthur Turner ran for 39 yards and a touchdown for Holmes.

Hinds will return to action next Thursday at 6:30 p.m., on the road against Northeast Mississippi.
