Vicksburg High started out slow against South Delta Friday, but the offense found its rhythm late to beat the Bulldogs and give coach Marcus Rogers his first win with the program.
The Gators scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to win 37-12.
“I think any time you win a ballgame it’s always positive. It was close throughout, all the way until the second half,” Rogers said. “We were stagnant on offense until the third quarter, going three and out, fumbling and kind of shooting ourselves in the foot. But in the fourth quarter we turned it on.”
Quarterback Marquez Pickett ended the game 4-of-9 passing for 116 yards and three touchdowns, two of which went to Tedarius Brown. Brown hauled in two catches for 99 yards, including a 65-yard score.
Antonio Brown showcased his talent on both sides of the ball, running for a touchdown on offense and scooping up a fumble for a 71-yard score.
Kareeme Butler caught one pass for 16 yards and a touchdown, while Antonio Brown capped the late scoring spree with a 31-yard rushing touchdown.
Rogers said his team is finally starting to come together at just the right time as Vicksburg hosts Warren Central next Friday in a much-anticipated rivalry matchup.
“We’ve just got to get back to the board, correct mistakes, and get ready for the crosstown rivalry,” he said.
