In its first two games, Warren Central has allowed two touchdowns and only a handful of first downs.

The scary part, for opponents at least, is that coach Josh Morgan doesn’t think they’ve played all that well.

“We’ve still got to shore up our defensive line. We’re playing a lot of guys, and still trying to find that right combination,” Morgan said, before adding, “We missed too many tackles.”

Whatever shortcomings the Vikings have had in the first two weeks, they don’t seem on the surface to have slipped much from last season.

WC allowed the fewest points in Class 6A in 2013. Neither Terry, its opponent in the 2014 season opener, nor Callaway scored as the result of a long touchdown drive.

Terry got a touchdown on an 82-yard run by quarterback Rayshard Kennedy that was essentially a broken play. Callaway’s touchdown followed a long fumble return inside the 10-yard line in the fourth quarter.

After forcing only one turnover against Terry, the Vikings got six inFriday’s 34-6 win over Callaway. Jeremy Judge had two interceptions, Jesse Wilson had one, and DeArius Christmas returned another 18 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter.

“We preached on it after Week 1 that we needed to get back to turnovers and forcing them, and we did that tonight and it got us going,” Morgan said after the win over Callaway.

The Vikings have also risen to another, more unique challenge in the season’s early going. Their first six opponents changed head coaches during the offseason, meaning there’s still little scouting information available.

As a result, Morgan said, the defense has had to prepare for a number of different formations and schemes to be ready for any possible scenario.

“We challenge them to do that, to be the best we can be. It shouldn’t always be about what the other team is doing,” Morgan said. “We’re preparing for a lot of things and throwing a lot of things at them, and they’re doing a good job with all of it.”

Up next is another new coach, albeit in a familiar uniform. Warren Central heads across town to Memorial Stadium on Friday night to face archrival Vicksburg.

The Gators beat South Delta 37-12 last week for their first win under coach Marcus Rogers.

“There will be uncertainty and all that, just like with any team. But it’s not going to be about the coaches, I promise you that,” Morgan said. “It’s going to be about who can execute better.”

Morgan added that the Warren Central-Vicksburg rivalry will provide yet another mental challenge for his squad — whether they can ignore the distractions and zero in on winning their third straight game.

“It is the next one, and that’s how we’re going to focus on it. But it’s not just another game. I’d be lying if I said it was,” Morgan said. “This game speaks for itself.”
