Special teams miscues costly for PCA

Porters Chapel Academy’s special teams were anything but special on Friday night.
The Eagles gave up two touchdowns on punt returns and another on a kickoff return, and were routed by Newton Academy 40-0.
Porters Chapel (1-2) has allowed five return touchdowns in its first three games.
“We’ve had issues with it,” PCA coach Wayne Lynch said. “We have a lot of younger guys on (special teams). That’s really the only break our starting offense and defense can get. We’re probably going to have to put some of the starters out there next week.”
The night got even worse for PCA late in the first half when starting quarterback Zac Morgan was knocked out of the game with an apparent concussion.
Lynch said it was too early to tell what Morgan’s status will be for next week’s district opener against Trinity. If Morgan can’t go then sophomore Patrick Minor, who filled in Friday night, will likely be the starter.
Minor, who also plays linebacker, had four tackles and two sacks against Newton. Logan Pickering led PCA with eight tackles.
The defense, though, was unable to get a handle on Newton’s power running game and eventually wore down, Lynch said.
“They were just bigger, and played power football. They controlled the line of scrimmage and shut us down on offense. We never could get anything going,” Lynch said. “We were just outmatched tonight.”

Martin’s other two touchdown passes covered 45 yards to Victor Villareal, and 55 yards to Cole Delaney.
Villareal also had four total tackles and two sacks to lead a defense that posted its second consecutive shutout and held Hebron Christian to 14 yards of total offense.
