Hinds Community College started the next leg of its season, appropriately, by riding the legs of three of its top players to a victory over Pearl River.
Joseph Houston kicked three field goals. Joshua Dixon ran for 112 yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Jarvis Summers added 75 yards and a touchdown on the ground as Hinds beat Pearl River 30-15 Thursday night in Raymond.
Pearl River (2-1, 0-1 MACJC South) was ranked No. 18 in the latest National Junior College Athletic Association poll. Hinds (2-1, 1-0) will face another ranked team next Thursday, when it travels to face No. 4 Mississippi Gulf Coast.
Hinds never trailed against Pearl River. A 14-yard touchdown run by Summers was sandwiched around field goals of 24 and 37 yards by Houston to help the Eagles to a 13-7 lead at halftime.
Hinds padded its lead with Dixon’s 2-yard TD run and a 40-yard field goal by Houston in the third quarter, but Pearl River made one last stab at a comeback.
Kaylon Cooper tossed a 10-yard touchdown pass to Austin Watts to cut Hinds’ lead to 23-15 with 5:45 left in the game. Hinds answered right back, with Summers finding Jahmmir Taylor for a 52-yard scoring strike on the next series to restore the two-touchdown lead.
Summers finished the game 11-of-42 passing for 142 yards. Cooper threw two touchdown passes, the late one to Watts and a 65-yarder to Bryant Magee in the first half, for Pearl River.
