St. Aloysius (3-1, 1-0) cruised to a 55-14 win over McAdams Friday to begin Region 2-1A play. Connor Smith rushed for two touchdowns and Connor Bottin returned an interception 90 yards for a score in the Flashes’ 41-point win.

“It was really good. We’re still trying to get people in the right spots,” coach BJ Smithhart said. “The defense looked really good tonight with our defensive line playing well. Josh Price had three sacks, so that really helped with the linebackers.”

St. Al was also able to cash in on two big special teams plays to put the game out of reach. Brandon Teller returned a punt for a touchdown and Lane Hynum scooped up a blocked punt later in the game for a score.

“We wanted to put some pressure on them and they did a good job,” Smithhart said. “Wet ball, things like that, and we felt like we had an advantage there. We didn’t really have any bad snaps, and that says a lot in those elements.”

Bottin and Price both rushed for touchdowns, while a George Tzotzolas run and two field goals rounded out the scoring for St. Aloysius.

The Flashes return home next Friday for the first time since Aug. 22 to take on Durant in a Region 2-1A matchup.

“It seems like we haven’t been (home) in a month,” Smithhart said. “We’re always excited playing at home. We love being home, and we’re expecting a big crowd Friday night.”

SIA 35, Franklin 0

Sharkey-Issaquena Academy (4-0) rolled up 500 yards and 16 first downs, and routed Franklin Academy in a rematch of last year’s MAIS eight-man championship.

It was SIA’s third consecutive shutout.

Austin Heranney started the scoring with a 53-yard touchdown pass to Victor Villareal and SIA never looked back, rushing for 290 yards and throwing for 210 in the win.

Quarterback Jack Martin was 8-of-14 passing for 157 yards and two touchdowns. The Confederates also had two players with more than 100 yards receiving each.

Cooper Anthony caught 10 passes for 138 yards and a touchdown, while Austin Steed hauled in three catches for 137 yards and two scores.
