PCA stumbles, falls in loss to Riverfield

Porters Chapel Academy’s dim playoff hopes hinged largely on finding a way to upset undefeated Riverfield on Friday night.

In the end, the only upsets were in the stomachs of fans who ate too many hot dogs and of the PCA players and coaches who let things get away from them in a hurry.

Riverfield, a Class AA power, scored 44 points in the first half and went on to beat the outmanned Eagles 51-14.

“They’re a good team. We were outmatched. They had 40 guys and we had 16,” PCA coach Wayne Lynch said. “We’re just going to keep playing and try to win the next two. That’s all we can do.”

Backup quarterback Patrick Minor threw two touchdown passes to Javontae Frye in the second half to help the Eagles avoid the shutout.

Minor finished the game 5-of-6 passing for 67 yards, and Frye caught four passes for 58 yards. Taylor Rushing had 11 tackles, while Austin Kraemer had six tackles and a sack.

PCA missed some chances early to strike fast. A reverse pass was caught by Josh Daffron, but fumbled and then returned for Riverfield’s first touchdown.

On the Eagles’ next series, a touchdown pass from Zac Morgan to Eric Jackson was wiped out by a chop block penalty. Morgan tossed an interception on the next play and it led to a 3-yard TD run by Clay Savage that put Riverfield ahead 14-0.

“We were right there. It did get away from us, and we didn’t capitalize on some things we had going for us,” Lynch said.

Cooper Anthony, Austin Heranney and Weston Joiner also scored touchdowns for SIA, which only ran 13 offensive plays but gained 249 yards.
