Bras will remain a symbol of support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month in Vicksburg, but they’ll be headed to Jackson once the undergarments are donated locally.
A 7th annual Bras for Breast Cancer event culminates with a ceremony and 5K walk ending at Thalia Mara Hall in Jackson dubbed Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. Riverwalk Casino in Vicksburg is donating $1 for each bra of any condition donated at the Warrenton Road casino’s hotel desk and eight other locations in and around Vicksburg and Jackson.
This year’s event is a departure from stringing up to 3,000 bras on the old U.S. 80 bridge across the Mississippi River, at the request of the American Cancer Society, organizers said.
“Riverwalk and our radio stations here at iHeartMedia were asked to partner with the American Cancer’s Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk set for Oct. 25 in downtown Jackson,” said Jan Michaels, marketing director at the parent company for radio stations Miss 103, 105.1 The River and 95.5 Hallelujah FM. “So, we will string the bras along a large portion of this year’s walk.  We will also hang the decorated bras and the bras dedicated in “honor of” or “in memory of” at the start of the walk at Thalia Mara Hall.”
“It was a tough decision to move the event because we have enjoyed the bridge so much but we thought this move would actually give more people the opportunity to see the bras “in action,” so to speak,” Michaels said.
