William Floyd “Bill” Field

William Floyd “Bill” Field, age 78, died at River Region Medical Center Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014.
He was the son of the late Gilbert and Mary Alice Field. Bill was born in St. Louis and raised in Galveston, Texas, until his parents were killed in a car wreck in Fort Worth, Texas.
He moved to Vicksburg where he lived with his grandmother, Mrs. William R. Hovious and his guardians, his aunt and uncle Sadie and Roy Wells.
He was predeceased by his parents; grandmother; aunt and uncle; an infant sister; and his grandson, Justin Ryan Field.
Bill was a graduate of Carr Central High School and attended Hinds Junior College. He was a former member of The Jaycees, the Y Men’s Club, the Warren County Hunting and Fishing Club, where he hunted for 60 years, coached Little League Baseball, and was baseball commissioner for Dixie Boys League for several years. He was one of the founders of the Culkin Volunteer Fire Department and served on the board of directors of The Culkin Fire District.
He retired as battalion chief of The Vicksburg Fire Department in 1999 with 27 years of service. Prior to, and while a member of Vicksburg Fire Department, he owned and operated Southern Salvage Inc.
After retirement from the fire department, he joined the staff of Riles Funeral Home until ill health prevented further employment.
Bill is survived by his wife, Mary Hunt Field; three sons, Bill Jr. (Donna) of Redwood, Ray (Susan) of Houston, Texas, and Kirby (Leigh Ann) of Utica; one daughter, Cathryn “Winkie” Hudson (George) of Port Gibson; eight grandsons, Brandon Field (Ali) of Troutman, N.C., Trey Field (Melanie) of Jackson, Caleb, Cory, and Ryan Field of Utica, Joseph Quimby (Hollye), Rob Quimby (Mary Beth), all of Vicksburg, and Hayden Quimby of Port Gibson; two granddaughters, Amanda and Sarah of Port Gibson; four great-grandsons, William Field IV of Jackson, Josh Field of Troutman, N.C., David Field of Utica and Hunt Quimby of Vicksburg; four great-granddaughters, Courtland Field of Troutman, N.C., Jane and Mary Field of Jackson, and Audrie Quimby of Vicksburg; two nephews, Ricky Mills ( Emily) of Brandon and Andy Mills of Buffalo, N.Y., and his cousin Roblyn Ring (Pat) of Vicksburg.
Grandsons will be Pallbearers.
The family would like to thank Dr. Murray Whitaker, Dr. Bill Pierce, and the fifth floor nursing staff for their compassionate care and a longtime family friend, Richard Thomas.
Services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2014, at Riles Funeral Home with the Rev. Thomas Lalor, pastor of St. Paul Catholic Church, officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
Visitation will be at the funeral home from 11 a.m. until the service.
