The Unnatural Inquirer is a novel by Simon R. Green. Seemingly shrouded in perpetual darkness, Nightside is a small area of London where monsters and men walk side by side. Private Investigator John Taylor works this allotment of mystical turf. In fact, he has been hired by the editor of the Unnatural Inquirer—Nightside’s infamous newspaper—with the promise of one million pounds. All John has to do is find a man who claims to have evidence of the Afterlife on DVD. Just after the Inquirer offered this man a lucrative deal, he and his disc disappeared without a trace. With so much money on the line, John can’t refuse, but he must contend with whoever—or whatever—else is out there looking for the disc.

They are looking forward to restoring it to its former glory and they are ready to welcome their second child to the family. The house is an endless maze of rooms, hallways, nooks, and hiding places. The Houston’s nine-year-old daughter, Leslie loves playing in and exploring the old home, but everything is not as it seems. The Houstons heard rumors that the house had a dark history and that something evil lurked within its walls. First, there are whispers. A child’s voice calls them to the rose garden. Then, the little voice beckons Leslie to a broken storm door and down a crumbling flight of stairs. It calls to the unborn child Karen is carrying. It seems to want something from each member of the family, but what secrets does this specter hold and why torment this family?

It is also hard to ignore the handsome—and living—Zach Slade with whom she keeps crossing paths. Zach is a former deputy sheriff who left a painful past in Montana to become a private investigator in Denver. When the restless ghost of an Old West gunslinger demands that Clare help him, she finds herself needing Zach for more than just his help.
