Harbor dredging to begin Monday

Vicksburg is next up in the rotation for routine dredging along the Mississippi River.
Seasonal buildup from sediment will be dredged from Vicksburg Harbor starting Monday, according to a news release from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Vicksburg District. Dredging there will follow similar work along the river’s main stem in Greenville. Ports at Lake Providence and Madison Parish, Yellow Bend, Claiborne County and Rosedale are to be completed by mid-December, the Corps has said.
In September, the Corps contracted Covington, La.-based Weeks Marine to perform the work, which consists of furnishing, delivering and operating one of the company’s seven cutterhead hydraulic pipeline dredge.
Dredging takes place annually that ensures the channel is clear for shipping. The Corps included statistics in its release this past week from a study by the Iowa Department of Transportation showing a single, 15-barge tow can move the same amount of cargo as 870 semi-trucks on the highway.
