William Atlas West Jr.

William Atlas West Jr. passed away on Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014, at his home in Vicksburg. He was 69.

He was born in Vicksburg on Nov. 13, 1945, to William Atlas West Sr. and Minnie Lee Moorehead West. He lived in Houston, Texas, for many years, but had lived in Vicksburg since 2000.

He was employed as a truck driver, and his CB handle was “Gator.” He served in the U.S. Marines during the Vietnam War, and received a Purple Heart along with numerous other medals. He was a member of the Baptist faith.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his father-in-law, Claude Wright; mother-in-law, Margie Wright; nephew, Shane Carter; and friend, Eddie Humphries.

He is survived by his wife, Claudia Marie West of Vicksburg; two sons, John West of Tennessee Colony, Texas, and Tony West (Aryn) of Atoka, Tenn.; daughter, Devin Donovan (Chris) of Vicksburg; brother, Don Carr West (Nelda) of Porter, Texas; two sisters, Donna Kay Whatley of Jackson and Pam Rushing (Emmette) of Vicksburg; five grandchildren, Christopher Donovan Jr., Josh West, Zoe West, Will Donovan, and Keatin Gibbins; and special friends, Marty Wright, Robert McCullough and Butch Spivey.

Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m.. on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2014, at Glenwood Funeral Home.  Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the hour of the service.
