Lady Gators take down Lady Vikes

In a game dominated by huge momentum swings and big scorers, none stood out more than Karry Callahan. Callahan posted a triple-double as the Missy Gators bested Warren Central 53-47 on the road Saturday to pick up a win against the Lady Vikes.

The junior racked up 11 points, 23 rebounds, 10 assists and nine steals to pace a Vicksburg team that scratched out a hard-fought win over its city rival.

“Vicksburg-Warren Central are big time rivals. This is bigger than a win,” Vicksburg interim coach Deborah Brown said. “It says a lot about the girls and the way they are playing. I just stressed to them all week, there’s no one person bigger or more important than the team.”

That proved true despite Callahan’s eye-popping numbers when the Missy Gators came out of the break trailing 25-22. Ruddie Shears exploded for 14 second-half points, including back-to-back threes to send Vicksburg ahead of the Lady Vike and the split crowd into a crazed frenzy. The buckets also gave VHS a 41-34 at the end of the third quarter. Shears finished with 20 points.

“Ruddie was on fire. I said, if you play with the other courts and you get in the gaps, they’ll see you,” Brown said. “I think that pumped Ruddie up more when she hit those two big threes back-to-back and she said ‘I feel it. I feel it.’ So I said keep going.”

Warren Central fell to 3-5 with the loss, while Vicksburg improved to 6-2 on the year.

“We’re really young. Today I probably had two seniors out of 14 girls, and inexperience on the court,” WC coach Jacqueline Glass said. “We’re young, we’re growing and I expect us to learn from the game. Sometimes you have to lose early to learn how to win later.”
