Charities cannot do it alone

More than a week ago, hundreds of families received assistance from The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree. This week even more received help from Good Shepherd just to make the ends meet this Christmas season.
These two organizations, and others, have worked tirelessly over the past few weeks and months to help local families in need, making sure area children have something under the Christmas tree come Christmas morning.
It is a task these groups take on with open minds and full hearts. They do so because they believe in the mantra that giving truly is better than receiving. But, they do not do it alone.
If it were not for the amazing generosity of others, these organizations would not be able to even come close to meeting the demand. If it were not for the giving nature of the residents of Vicksburg and Warren County, the smiles that will be found on the faces of area children helped by these organizations simply would not exist.
For that, we applaud everyone who chipped in money, adopted Angels, donated toys, gave some change or have helped ring a bell next to a red kettle.
Just like every corner of our world, there are those who need a helping hand at times and it is amazing the giving nature of those who live in this area.
Charities and churches who call the Vicksburg area home are able to do so much good for those in need because of the giving spirit that resides here.
Unfortunately, the need does not go away after Christmas.
There are those who are in need every day. Those who need help, not only making ends meet, but simply meeting the most basic of needs such as food and shelter.
Thankfully, there are organizations out there to help and it is important that we continue to find ways to support these organizations, whether it be with the gift of money, donations or the giving of time as volunteers.
It is more than a saying that giving is better than receiving. Here in Vicksburg and Warren County it is a way of life.
