The Warren County Courthouse will close four days for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays next week, but time remains for 2014 property taxes to be paid before the Feb. 1, 2015 due date.
County government will close Thursday, Dec. 24, and Friday, Dec. 25 for Christmas, following state offices, which also are to close. They’ll also closed Thursday, Jan. 1 and Friday, Jan. 2 for the New Year’s holiday.
Property taxes for 2014 may be paid in the Tax Collector’s Office by Feb. 1 before any penalties or interest fees kick in, Tax Collector Antonia Flaggs Jones said. Delinquent property taxes are subject to being sold at public auction if amounts aren’t paid for three years. Tax sales are held every August in the courthouse and are moderated by the tax collector.
Taxpayers are also encouraged to pay property taxes online. Warren County is one of six counties in the state that use the Mississippi 1 Stop website to pay those fees. The address is https://www.pay1stop.com and may be accessed from the county’s website, www.co.warren.ms.us. A 3 percent convenience fee is charged to all transactions, payable to a taxpayer’s credit card company.
Checks are accepted in the collector’s office until July 15 each year. Payments may be done online until August 1.
Separately, the local office of the Mississippi Department of Human Services is closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, local office director Terri Cosey said. The Openwood Street office will reopen 8 a.m. Friday. It’ll be closed again Thursday and Friday for New Year’s, then reopen 8 a.m., Monday, Jan. 5.
