A Vicksburg man faces multiple traffic charges after a one-vehicle accident on Washington Street Saturday night that sent two people to the hospital and damaged a utility pole.

Dexter Smith, 26, 104 Azalea Lane, was being held without bond at the Issaquena County Correctional Facility pending an initial appearance today in Vicksburg Municipal Court. Vicksburg police said Smith faces charges of DUI, reckless driving and driving without a license in connection with the accident, which occurred after 8 p.m. Saturday on Washington between Mattingly and Lee streets.

Passenger Denisha Ollie, 31, who is four months pregnant, was taken to River Region Medical Center and then transferred to University of Mississippi Medical Center, where she was in fair condition, according to a hospital spokesman. Ronald Humes Jr., 22, who was also a passenger, was treated and released from River Region.

Vicksburg firefighters had to use the Jaws of Life to remove Humes, who was trapped in the back of the truck cab.

Vicksburg police Capt. Sandra Williams said Smith left the parking lot of a convenience store at the corner of Washington and Mattingly at a high rate of speed and was northbound on Washington when he lost control and hit the pole.
