Pickers coming to Mississippi

Published 11:59 pm Friday, January 9, 2015

Hardy Katzenmeyer knows first hand about “American Pickers,” a hit documentary series that travels the country in search of prized antiques, and he has already tried to make contact with the stars of the show, Mike Wolfe and Frank Fritz. Tourism officials say the stars are heading to Mississippi and Louisiana this month for their next scheduled road trip.

“I have tried to get in contact with them and I haven’t heard anything back,” Katzenmeyer said.

Katzenmeyer, who is the owner of Katzenmeyer’s Auction Service and Antique Retail Shop, purchased the gigantic boot that serves as a landmark outside his place of business on Washington Street, from one of the “American Pickers” stores in Nashville.

The pair of antiquing gurus, who have been dubbed two of the most skilled pickers in the business, travel across the country in search of one-of–a-kind vintage memorabilia in hopes of finding a hidden gem.

“They like to find a place where there are buildings that are full. The junkier the better,” Katzenmeyer said.

“That’s the way they like it,” he said.

To be considered by Wolfe and Fritz applicants must email the show at americanpickers@cineflix.com or leave a message at 1-855-653-7878. Applicants must include their name, a contact number and a description of their items. Only private collections are eligible.

“American Pickers” airs at 8 p.m. Wednesdays on the History Channel and along with covering all the wheeling and dealing that goes on to find a fair price for the cherished possession, viewers also get to meet the interesting people Wolfe and Fritz encounter along the way, listening to their stories and the histories of their collections.

“We are thrilled to welcome American Pickers to Mississippi,” said Malcolm White, the director of Visit Mississippi.

“Given our state’s rich history and heritage, Mike and Frank are sure to uncover a number of hidden treasures here,” he said.

Items the pickers are searching for include old advertising signage, old toys, pinball and slot machines, vintage concert posters and T-shirts, Folk art and Civil War antiques.
