Bowmar Elementary School
• Julie Marcy, from ERDC Environmental Lab, read to the 3rd grade classes and presented each student a book, “Who is Jane Goodall?” She shared her inspiration of becoming a research biologist with the students.

Bovina Elementary School
• Our Bovina Giant leaders last week were Cadence Carter, Michael Berger, Kenyla Harris, Zaylon Green, Marquan Jones, Precious Jackson, Kaitlynn Ozburn, Preston Pittman, Chelsea Chiles, Shane Levins, Kaylyn Carver, Musa Blake, Alex Hearn, Carley Jones, Marleigh Williams, Dylan Solomon, Summer Mocknick and Mylie Nelson.
• Our top classes for bringing in the most boxtops are Mrs. Harvey’s kindergarten class and Mrs. Hughes’ third grade class.
• Our Spelling Bee winner was Natalie Edwards and the runner up was Chaney Parman.
• We are learning about Habit 6 from The Seven Habits of Happy Kids. This habit is about learning to synergize. It is the habit of creative cooperation. Our students are using teamwork, open-mindedness, and the adventure of find new solutions to old problems.
• Our Bovina bucks leaders last week were Mrs. Hughes’ third grade class and Mrs. Mixon’s second grade class.
Dana Road Elementary School
• Miss Mississippi, Jasmine Murray, visited and presented an antismoking program called “Tar Wars”.
• Madison Armstrong placed third in Division L (Group/Family 3rd-5th grade) in the District Excellence in Reading Competition.
• Ty’Shon Hill placed first in Division B (1st Grade Individual) in the District Reading Fair. Ty’Shon advances on to compete in the Regional Reading Fair in March.
• Third grade parent night will be held Jan. 22nd at 6 p.m.. Important information about the 3rd grade promotion test will be given.
Jacob’s Ladder
• The students at Jacob’s Ladder went to First Presbyterian Kindergarten and Preschool for Chapel Chat on Thursday. We always look forward to seeing our friends from the preschool, singing songs with Mr. Thomas, and listening to Bible stories with Ms. Jan.
• On Friday we went to Vicksburg Convalescent Home to play bingo with our friends. We always have such a good time laughing and visiting with the wonderful residents.
• We were excited to see Mrs. Sharon Andrews at the YMCA on Tuesday for weekly exercise.
• Student of the week is Phillip Scales.
Porters Chapel Academy
• Eager Eagle of the week in the first grade class of Rebecca Pace was Alyssia Kyzar. Students are learning how to count money by purchasing items from the classroom store and adding the amounts and counting coins as part of their morning routine. The students are learning jingles to assist them in learning parts of speech.
• December Students of the month, recognized for their good behavior and good grades are: Mrs. Pace’s First Grade class – Garrett Reeves, Mrs. Stinson’s Second Grade class – Sophie Masterson, Mrs. Angel’s Third Grade class – Abbie Yates, Mrs. Bennett’s Fourth Grade class – Ryanne Richardson, Mrs. King’s Fifth Grade class – Katie Tillman, and Mr. King’s Sixth Grade class – Erin Gullett.
Redwood Elementary School
• Morning announcement leaders for the week include Jason Ashley, Hailey Blackwell, Joey Greer, and Jamie Boyd.
• Welcome Redwood’s newest staff member, Librarian Greg Sellers!
• We would like to recognize The Leader in Me monthly “Star Students” for consistently modeling effective leadership qualities. One representative was chosen for each grade level and their success will be celebrated at the end of the month during The Leader in Me assembly including Josh Williams, Luke Worthy, Victor Baker, Destyne Henderson, Jordan William, April Skipworth, and Landon Pettway.
• Again, a big SHOUT out to Mrs. Watkins’ third grade class for being the first winner of The Leader in Me “spirit stick”.

Scholastic Academy

• Students in Art are learning about visual perception. Each class is creating drawings with objects that are near and far.
South Park Elementary School
• Second graders at South Park Elementary created penguins and snowmen. The students used metal buckets and googly eyes for the penguins. Tissue paper and accordion style crafts were used to make the snowmen. The students were so eager to see their finished products!

• Mr. James E. Stirgus, Jr. was our “Gator Spotlight” on Monday, Jan. 5.
• The Vicksburg High Choral Department will present the musical “Tarzan” on Jan. 30 and Jan. 31, 7 p.m. each night. Contact Tracy Smithey at 601-831-1807 for ticket information.
• United Way has announced the Teen Help Essay Contest. Students must be a graduating senior for the 2014-2015 academic year. Students must write a one-page essay on the topic “The Importance of Volunteerism”. Essays are due Feb. 6. No late entries will be accepted. First place winner will receive a $500 book scholarship, and the second place winner will receive a $250 book scholarship.
