JUST HAVE A BALL: Langston Moore, left and Melissa Boguslawsky, with The Partnership For A Healthy Mississippi, toss out red kick balls to students at Dana Road.
Friday afternoon, the second and third-grade students at Dana Road Elementary School were given a red kick ball after participating in a program that promoted exercise and healthy eating.
The purpose of the Just Have a Ball program is to educate elementary school children on the advantages of play as a way to be physically active.
Dana Road Elementary School was one of 22 schools in the state that was offered the program, said Langston Moore.
Moore is the communications director for The Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi.
During the hour-long program, children learned about the number of servings of vegetables they should eat each day, how much was too much sugar and how long one needs to exercise to burn a calorie.
Wilson and Hartwell Furr, of Jackson, founded Just Have a Ball and after the success of the program they handed it over to The Partnership for a Healthy Mississippi, said Moore. The program has distributed more than 20,000 balls to children across the State of Mississippi.
The program is sponsored by Subway Restaurants and UnitedHealthcare Community Plan of Mississippi and during the 2014-15 school year the group is expected to give out approximately 6,000 kick balls to school children.
