Third candidate enters District 1 supervisor race

A third candidate filed paperwork in the Republican primary for District 1 Supervisor earlier this week, the lone filing reported from the circuit clerk’s office this past week.

Johnny Beauchamp, a landscape business owner and a former Warren County sheriff’s deputy, filed qualifying papers for the seat currently held by John Arnold. Earlier this month, Steven Houston, an Air Force retiree and real estate agent, entered the race, as did Arnold.

“It’s just something I’d like to pursue,” Beauchamp said when reached Wednesday. “It’s really gone down (the community) the past few years. I want to bring it back up.”

Arnold was first elected in 2011 after toppling three-term incumbent David McDonald in the primary and defeating two opponents easily in the general election. No other seat on the board had more than one declared entrant as of Friday.

Qualifying ends Feb. 27 for 24 county- and district-level races and eight statewide races to appear on this year’s primary and general election ballot. Primaries are Aug. 4 and the general election is Nov. 3.

Other local incumbents who’ve qualified include Chancery Clerk Donna Hardy, Tax Assessor Angela Brown, Coroner Doug Huskey, County Prosecutor Ricky Johnson, District 2 Supervisor William Banks, District 3 Supervisor Charles Selmon, District 5 Supervisor Richard George, District Attorney Ricky Smith, justice court judges Eddie Woods and James Jefferson and constables Glenn McKay and John Heggins.

In District 4, port commission member Marty Crevitt has filed for supervisor. Board of Supervisors president Bill Lauderdale has said he will not run for another term in the district. Besides the two challengers in District 1, the only other office with a challenger is that of justice court judge in the central district where Henry Phillips has filed to run against Jefferson.

Two multicounty district races on the ballot this year are for the Public Service Commission and Transportation Commission. Each elect northern, central and southern district commissioners.
