The weekend started in the bitter cold for Ole Miss, took a break for the rain, and ended with a little bit of both on the horizon.

The Rebels persevered through it all to take two out of three from Wright State in a disjointed series in Oxford.

Austin Knight and Josh Watkins had two hits apiece, and J.B. Woodman drove in the go-ahead run with a double in the fifth inning as Ole Miss beat Wright State 3-2 in the second game of a doubleheader Sunday.

Wright State won 3-1 in the first game behind a three-run home run by Gabe Snyder.

The entire series was disrupted and altered by weather. Friday’s opener was played with wind chills in the teens. Saturday’s second game was rained out, and the second game of Sunday’s makeup doubleheader was shortened to seven innings.

“There was some relief, especially getting the win in the third was really important for us, not for an ego boost or anything like that, but to get another win under our belts,” said sophomore shortstop Errol Robinson, who made a diving stop to help turn a game-ending double play in the second game. “We fought so hard all through the game and even the last game. It feels really good to come out victorious.”

Robinson’s RBI single in the bottom of the third gave Ole Miss a 2-1 lead in game two. Wright State (4-2) came back to tie it in the fourth, but left the bases loaded.

In the fifth, Cameron Dishon reached on an infield singe, stole second and scored on Woodman’s RBI double to give the Rebels (4-2) the lead for good.

Wyatt Short got the win with 3 1/3 innings of shutout relief. He allowed three hits, walked one and struck out four.

“He was terrific,” Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco said of Short. “We needed him, coming into a tough situation with the bases loaded, and then he gets the big strikeout. I’m proud of him. It’s tough on this day after sitting for 12-13 innings to get called in and pitch three and a third innings.”
