Another round of winter weather could be on the way for Warren County later this week.

The National Weather Service is calling for an 80 percent chance of sleet and snow Wednesday night and a 40 percent chance of sleet Thursday.

“Our entire area is in a limited risk until you get just north of Vicksburg, and then it’s in an elevated condition,” Warren County Emergency Manager John Elfer said.

The elevated risk area includes a forecast for great ice accumulation and brings with it a higher chance for power outages and slick road surfaces, Elfer said. A limited risk calls mainly for ice on bridges and overpasses with some accumulation on roads.

“They are somewhat confident that we will have some ice. This will change as we get closer and they refine their forecasting,” Elfer said.

The weather service is calling for an 80 percent chance of showers Wednesday, turning to sleet and snow that night as the temperature falls to about 27 degrees. A quarter to half inch of precipitation is possible.

Sleet could persist until noon Thursday, according to the weather service.

“Thursday we will struggle to make it to 32 degrees,” Elfer said.

Residents should gas up their vehicles, check butane and propane and their homes and purchase an ice scraper sooner rather than later, he said.

“Now is the time to get ready. Don’t wait until Wednesday afternoon,” he said.

Freezing temperatures will persist into Thursday night, as the mercury is expected to dip to about 23, but precipitation should end at about noon Thursday.
