Three people were injured and traffic was snarled for hours after a vehicle attempting to enter Interstate 20 from East Clay Street veered off the road struck a vehicle traveling down the highway.

At about 8:30 p.m. Monday, Anthony Lanier, 43, was attempting to enter I-20 from the East Clay Street onramp when his 2008 Ford Mustang veered off the road, traveled through a grassy area and struck a 2012 Doge Challenger drive by 40-year-old Demetrice Richardson, also of Vicksburg, Vicksburg traffic investigator Connie Ricketts said.

Lanier was taken by helicopter to University of Mississippi Medical Center, Ricketts said. He was listed in fair condition this morning, UMMC spokesman Dustin Barnes said.

Lanier’s vehicle has a Florida license plate, but he is believed to be living in Vicksburg, Ricketts said.

Richardson and her two children, Cameron Cooper, 15, and Antonea Cooper, 13, were taken by ambulance to Merit Health River Region Hospital where they were treated and released, Ricketts said.

Cameron Cooper was in the front seat of the Challenger, and Antonea Cooper was in the back seat, Ricketts said.

Traffic was backed up for at least two hours Monday night as police investigated the crash.
