Clear Creek schedule heats up

Golf, by its very nature, is a game built around patience and steady play.
The number of carts and players roaming Clear Creek Golf Course these days, however, seems as chaotic as the interstate that runs a few yards away from the front nine.
The public course in Bovina will host its annual youth golf camp beginning on Tuesday. It’s the third of six major events scheduled there between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The Warren County Junior Championship is later this month, and will be followed by the Warren County Championship and Warren County Cup in August.
The course has already hosted the Bud Light 2-Man Scramble and the Clear Creek Club Championship this summer.
“Winter time gets slow and boring. This is definitely the fun time,” Clear Creek course pro Kent Smith said. “The days get long and there’s not many days off, but I like the summer a lot better than the winter.”
About two dozen children are expected to attend the youth golf camp, which begins Tuesday at 9 a.m. and continues each morning through Friday. The youngsters will be instructed on golf etiquette as well as basic skills. They’ll play a few holes each day and a mini tournament on Friday, Smith said.
“It’s just to introduce them to the game,” Smith said. “Most of the kids that come probably haven’t played before, and we’re teaching them the basics. It’s not a real serious camp. We’re just trying to play a couple of hours a day and have fun.”
Instructors at the camp will include local high school golfers Gabriel Riveros, Channing Curtis and Karley Whittington. Riveros and Curtis have helped St. Aloysius to Class 1A championships in three of the last four years, and Whittington is a two-time defending Class III girls medalist.
After they get through with the camp, it’ll be their turn to compete on a more serious level. The Warren County Junior Championship is the next in line on the course’s schedule.
A date has yet to be set, Smith said, because he’s trying to avoid a schedule conflict with the Mississippi Junior Golf Association State Amateur July 14-16 at Annandale Golf Club in Madison. Most of the county’s top juniors will also play in that event, and Smith wants a date that allows them to be well-rested for the county tournament.
On Aug. 1 and 2, it’ll be time for the 2015 Warren County Championship. The biggest tournament on the local calendar is open to all Warren County residents and Clear Creek Club members and typically features nearly 100 competitors in a 36-hole tournament.
Whittington has won the last two women’s titles, and her brother Chris is the four-time defending men’s champion.
The final big event on the schedule is the Warren County Cup, set for Aug. 21-23. That’s a three-day, Ryder Cup style event that features match play between the top golfers from the Clear Creek Club Championship and County Championship, and those from the Vicksburg Country Club.
