Vicksburg National Military Park is ready to issue a permit for the social media group #wakethedead Confederate Flag Rally & Protest.

Any group larger than 25 needs a permit to assemble at the park. The cost of the permit is $25.

“We’re in the process of issuing a permit,” park ranger Patty Montague said. “From what I understand the rally is going to be Saturday. No one has officially contacted us.”

The group has a Facebook page started July 9 with a post from Thursday stating the group will be staging at Walmart around 2 p.m. and then will proceed to the park at 3 p.m.

“We will be working with the group and nothing has to be issued prior to, it’s always flexible,” Montague said.

Based on the posts from the group it’s unclear what exactly their plans are.

“They won’t necessarily be in the park, but in the area,” ranger Ray Hamel said. “If they are not in the park they do not need a permit, but if they try to come into the park, we will issue them a permit the day of the event.”

With a permit there are a few restrictions the group have to adhere to.

“The group can’t impede visitation or take away from the visitor experience,” Hamel said. “We have no qualms about issuing a permit.”

While the park is ready to issue a permit, there is no guarantee the group will even show up.

“Honestly we have no clue how many people to expect,” Hamel said. “All we’re seeing is Facebook travel.”

It is unusual for the park to plan to issue a permit based on social media traffic.

“This seems to be a pretty exceptional occasion,” Hamel said.
