PORT GIBSON — Margaret Elizabeth Tirey Guthrie “Jodie.” 88, of Port Gibson, passed away from this life on July 18, 2015.

She is survived by her husband, Shreve Guthrie Jr.; three children, Shreve III, Vernon Sr., daughter Tirey; five grandchildren Vernon Jr., Charles, Laura, Shreve IV and Janie; and one great-granddaughter McKinley.

She is preceded in death by her father and mother, Vernon Jacob Tirey Sr.; and Jodie Ruth Johnson Tirey and brother, Vernon Jacob Tirey Jr.

She was born in Anguilla and graduated from Carr Central High School in 1945. After graduation, she worked with Dr. Mansell as his secretary at First Presbyterian Church in Vicksburg. She received  a bachelor’s degree in art from Belhaven College, and during her sophomore year studied at the Pratt Institute in New York where she focused on costume design.

After her wedding on Dec. 27, 1952, she moved to Port Gibson, where she taught fourth grade. She loved sewing, reading, watching old movies and traveling with her husband. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Port Gibson, where she sang in the choir for many years.

Services were 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 21, 2015, at First Presbyterian Church.
