A unique send off for The Post’s intern

This summer The Vicksburg Post was lucky enough to have a talented intern from Ole Miss by way of the University of Alabama via Connecticut.

Dylan Rubino worked eight weeks at the newspaper after having moved from Connecticut to attend college at Alabama only to transfer to Ole Miss, where he works on the staff of college’s newspaper The Daily Mississippian.

Rubino had the opportunity to cover many stories that make Vicksburg a unique place to live and work. When he accepted the offer to live and work in our community for the summer, I doubt he thought he would leave with the experience he gained. He learned to cover events that make a community special.

He wrote about donuts, beauty pageants, basketball camps, lady golfers, registering to vote and many other topics he never thought about before.

He learned how the process of building a community newspaper from start to finish works. He learned the basics of taking pictures and how to set an SLR camera.

Rubino expressed to me that it was a pleasure to work with the staff of The Vicksburg Post and the community. He had never meant a more friendly and welcoming community than Vicksburg. He was overwhelmed with the caring and appreciative people of our community, how they welcome you with open arms and always have time to help you write a story and talk to you.

He came to know what The Vicksburg Post means to the community and what the community means to The Vicksburg Post. Vicksburg makes our job easy.

Rubino also learned that wearing ear buds in both ears in the newsroom is not a good idea. He spent his first week here blocking out the world while he wrote a story, only to have a tennis ball tossed at him to get his attention.

Friday, at the end of the day, publisher Tim Reeves expressed our gratitude for all his hard work and we showered him with tennis balls, a reminder of his time at The Post.
