City officials will reopen an improved, paved walking trail at Lee Street with a ribbon cutting and walk Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
The track is between the City Park pavilion and the skate park, and adjacent to the swimming pool.
The improvements were done under a project performed jointly by the city of Vicksburg and Project CHANGE, a policy, systems, and environmental strategy initiative implemented by My Brother’s Keeper Inc., a private, nonprofit organization, with a mission to reduce health problems throughout the U.S. and promote healthy living and the use of accessible public facilities.
The walking trail improvements were possible through a $25,000 MBK grant to the city. The money was used to resurface the quarter-mile track, replacing its gravel covering the track with a smooth surface safe for walking and jogging.
Besides the City Park trail, city officials are preparing plans for a new walking trail at Halls Ferry Park. The Board of Mayor and Aldermen are seeking $100,000 Recreational Trails grant from the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks to help fund construction and seeking an additional $30,000 in additional funding from MBK for amenities such as benches, ADA compliant water fountains, and stretching and exercise equipment.
